Preparing the ground

Preparing the ground is key to professional turf laying. It can help you achieve a higher quality finish and will also help you save your time and effort. Here are a few steps to prepare the ground for turf laying:
  • Rotovate the area to be turfed
  • Remove any existing grass, stone, or other debris from the ground
  • Level the ground using topsoil
  • Pack down the top layer of soil using your feet

Steps for turf laying

Steps for turf laying

  • Start unrolling your turf along a straight edge of the lawn
  • Unroll the second turf along the same line of the first turf and butt both their ends without overlapping them with each other
  • Once a row is complete, lay the boards flat so you can unroll the turf from here for the next row
  • Stagger the patches of turf for even coverage on the lawn
  • Cut the ends of each row with a sharp knife to achieve a fine finish

Aftercare advice

You should water your turf within an hour of laying. In dry conditions, water your turf in the morning and evening until the roots become strong. Start mowing your lawn once the roots have adequately bonded with the soil, which usually takes 7 to 10 days after turf laying.
